A Snowy Retreat

The sun reflected so brightly off the snow that Jessica needed to put on her sunglasses. Fumbling for the case in her backpack, she found the Ray-Bans and easily slipped them on. She’d decided to buy only the best since treating herself to Lasik surgery last year. Now she thoroughly enjoyed the freedom of not having to wear glasses.

Jess looked up toward the cabin and hiked her backpack up onto her shoulder. The snow must have been at least two feet deep and completely covered the gravel driveway all the way from the main road to the cabin. Setting off, she knew that leaving her Jeep at the base of the small hill was a smart idea. Experience told her that discerning where the ditches were on either side was nearly impossible.

It was just a short trek, the snow reached her knees as she cut a path toward the little cabin. Fortunately, she had outfitted herself for this kind of weather. This was what she was looking forward to. The soft hush of fresh snow. Fresh snow to cleanse both her mind and her spirit.

Reaching the side-door, she shrugged the backpack to the ground. Thinking of her dad, she brushed her pants free of the clinging snow and stomped it from her boots. She pushed open the door and remembered when he had built this covering to protect the entrance from the weather and a dry place to stack wood…
